So we all left the very nice hotel in Metz, well almost all of us, Darryl and Lee (C63 AMG) who were looking very loved up by the end of the evening, they were last seen going to their room hand in hand at about 4am, it must have been a busy night for them as when we left the hotel they were still ripping zzz. The plan was for us all to stop at the first services on the motorway for some juice and a regroup, de ja vous. The idea was that on our way back to Calais we were going to visit the old historic Grand Prix circuit just west of Reims. A convoy of around 10 cars arrived, and after about five minutes cars were tearing up and down the start/ finish straight. Darren in the M3 (E46) had a great drag race with James (the dark horse) in his 335i, very close match. Stuart and Paul in a M3 cab (E93) were obviously pretty keen to see what that car could do on this stretch of road - the noise was awesome.
After about twenty minutes of this we were starting to attract a bit too much attention so we all decided it best to get out of there, like now. So we all kind of ran away with our sights set on Calais. Literally as we left a few more cars arrived, a shame you missed that but it was getting a bit ballistic and was the right time to leave. I must admit I would have liked to have seen Tony (the transporter) and Ian in the CLS 63 AMG blatting it up and down the start finish straight with Darryl and Lee in tow in the C63 AMG.
So a good final stretch to Calais with the only speeding ticket being picked up by Tim and Ian in the SLR and collecting a pretty manageable 90 Euro fine. Jim and I had a drag race with Jon and Matt in the 335i we had the edge but not by much and as we were edging away from Jon, Darryl and Lee in the C63 passed us both and put us well and truly in our place. One last drag race before we arrived at Calais and it was time to take on Gary (our kid) and Chaz in the RS4, very very close and I think it just came down too who got on the gas first.
To my team, what can I say, ok we didn’t win, in fact we came third, but there were no losers on this trip (I would say that
- we came third) what a great time and some fantastic memories, can’t wait to see the film.
Whilst on the run I was chatting to Paul (as in Paul and Sarah RS4) and I said how good I thought it was that they do these trips together, its their third trip with Rabbit Run and previous to them joining in with us they had done a few Cannonballs, I really enjoy their company especially when Sarah is ripping into Paul. Any way Paul’s reply was “who else would I bring, Sarah is my best mate”, it brought a tear to my eye, well done guys. Tim and Ian the SLR looked awesome you should get to see some great shots (mostly of the rear) of your bat mobile, Darren and Ken in the Blue M3 cab I can still hear the thrashed rasp of that car ringing around my head. Two days after we got back Darren sold the car back to the guy that used to own it before Darren for £000’s over its value, well done Darren and if only he knew! Martyn and Alan in the RX8 well done for keeping your heads up with the tyre issue, and no fuel issues this year and last but in no way least Andy and Chris in the Aero 8, what can I say, it was emotional. Oh and thanks to my co driver Jim, it’s the first time on any of the six rabbit runs that I have not done 100% of the driving, well done mate.
To all my team a big WELL DONE and here’s to next year, and see you all at the reunion if not before, Cheers Craig
Having come 3rd last year (our first in the Team format) I was interested in not so much winning, but just not losing again! Last year when I took the approach it’s not the winning that’s important, it’s the taking part, we lost. So this year took more interest in not just keeping tabs with my team but also trying to stay near the front of the pack. The distance and roads were definitely more in team 2’s style this year and although we didn’t finish in first place, (well done G,,,,ggrr) we didn’t lose…. Craig. My team this year comprised mainly of Rabbit Run virgins. Mighty German muscle was the order of the day, with the awesome SL 63 of Shaun and Scott, the SL 65 of Paul & Chris plus Nigel’s M5. Nick and Mickey travelled in high speed Luxury (double glazed at that) in the Silver Spur and in between distributing Kentucky Fried chicken from car to car at 70 miles an hour hhmm, and shortcutting the odd roundabout, went great guns. The dark horse of the Team and the whole event were James and Bruce. Why of course wouldn’t the most distinguished and sensible car be the first out of the blocks, on more than one occasion. It’s always difficult to train a team home together (one behind the other) to gain the extra point and as team 1 have proven, doesn’t always pay. It looked great on paper and it was the case, I had a great team and co driver in Matt, thanks guys, Happy Days
All in all the whole event was a success, more than I had hoped thanks again for all your great feedback. As with each year, distances, timing and hotels are always difficult to guarantee until we arrive, in whatever order but it all fell into place. Watch it boys next year, is Team 2’s year . Jon
Well what can I say? For fear of repeating myself…..Team 3 VICTORIOUS again !!! Pretty much trouble free this year as well, other than Andy (ML63 AMG) cracking his windscreen and Darryl (C63 AMG) nearly writing off his nearside front wing on the Nordschliefe. Fantastic trip this year particularly as I shared the driving with Chaz, this was the first year I had not done all the driving and it really made the trip more enjoyable. It was great to meet up with my old adversaries Tony and Ian (CLS63 AMG) and Darryl (C63 AMG) and his new co-pilot Lee ( as mad as Darryl) and also to meet some great new people whom I believe I will become firm friends with over the years, Andy and Christian (ML63 AMG), Stuart and Paul (M3). The only disappointment was that Nick and Carl (Porsche C4S) didn’t make the last great drive to Metz as they decided to prolong their tour and drive to the south of France. Got to say this was one of my most enjoyable Rabbit Run's and of course victory again made it that much sweeter, thanks again Team 3!!!!!
We had a fabulous time and we sincerely hope you all did to, so from Craig, Jon and Gary thank you all so much for your custom and company - look forwards to seeing you all at the reunion and Rabbit Run 2010.
